CHAWAN EXHIBITION 2005 OFFICIALLY OPENED

Last Saturday evening (Sept. 10, 2005) the exhibition was officially opened at the Abbey in Hemiksem (near Antwerpen), in the presence of several local Belgian governors and mayors of local cities. Mr. Shohei Naito, the Japanese ambassador in Belgium, and his wife were special guests.

The opening ceremony had a lot of important guests and was very well received. The chawan catalogue was presented. The first events (three lectures by Japanese participants) took place at Sunday, Sept. 11, 2005.

If you were present last Saturday or Sunday, please let us know what you thought about it. We are happy to publish a summary of the comments on this site. You can contact us in Japanese at: . If you made some nice photo's, you can also mail them to this address, but please do not send too many and not too big (in that case please contact us first).

PART 1. CHAWAN & TEA PROMOTION

In the interest of the symposium on ceramics, het Laatste Huis vzw has organised a project with exhibitions and demonstrations on Japanese and Chinese tea ceremonies.

Demonstrations of the stoke techniques of the Chawans include Korean Ido technique and traditional Japanese Raku.

Official support by the Japanese Embassy in Belgium
and The Province of Antwerp

Our exhibition is supported by the Japanese Embassy in Belgium (check the second, violet table: Sat. 10 Sep - Mar. 2006).

The department of Culture from the Province of Antwerp, under which support the project Aarde-Werk 2005 and the exhibition "Chawans" is organised, will take care of the insurance of the exhibition during transport and stay.

(Signed at July 20, 2005, by Peter De Wilde, Head of Departement Cultuur, Dienst Cultureel Erfgoed.)

Locations

The exhibition and the tea ceremonies will take place in the St. Bernardus Abbey in Hemiksem (Belgium, near Antwerpen) and in an 18th-century tea house on the banks of the Schelde, behind the church of Hellegat in Niel. In this extraordinary place we will uncover the mysteries of the somewhat obscured contemporary tea culture.

Wide range of forms and techniques

It is a rare pleasure to exhibit Chawans. By making it a group exhibition, we are assured of a wide range of forms and techniques, which will explore all angles of this seemingly mundane object. The tea ceremony demonstrations will shine a light on the function of the Chawan in eastern culture and will grant us a fitting context for the exhibition.

PART 2. THE TRAVELLING EXHIBITION

After the symposium, the exhibition at Abbey of Hemiksem in Belgium, it will go to numerous galleries for periods of three weeks. We are currently orchestrating a total exhibition span of approximately four months.

PARTICIPANTS

Participants will partake in this project by exhibiting 3 or 4 of your personally crafted Chawans.

Check the list of participants.
